Here I am, sitting in the dark corner of Dunn Brothers, my favorite place to write. Since starting my book last June, I have tried writing in many different places. My home is much too distracting. There are always unfinished chores that I have to work on, a pile of something or another that beckons me as I take a bathroom break, the thought that I could multitask laundry and writing, in which one always suffers. Not to mention the biggest distractions at all: my daughters. There is nothing more fun or entertaining for me than playing with them, so almost everything else always takes the back burner. I’ve realized that to write, I need to get out of my home.
Dunn Brothers has unknowingly become my main “office” for this book. There were mornings last summer that I watched the clock, waiting until it opens, so I could start writing, because another thought or memory popped into my head as I was sleeping. Once, I sat in the back of my minivan with my computer plugged in, and got a few paragraphs in before an appointment. Later, while traveling, I thought of a few things while on the road, and pulled into a McDonalds to get it typed quick. I have brought my purple “book bag” to city and local parks, libraries, only to learn those are my favorite places to play, not write. I am always much more productive here. There is something therapeutic to me as I listen to the conversation, music, and coffee and cappuccino machines. This is where I do my best work, and where I cheat on my diet.
I won’t carry on too long, as I have some more editing to do in my book, and a big fat omelet to eat. It’s going to be a beautiful morning.
